Fatema Islam

Fatema Islam works as project coordinator for the UNVFVT funded project Unit for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Torture and European Commission funded project A Method for the Empowerment of Torture Survivors (METS). She has also assumed the role of social advisor and provides direct assistance to the torture survivors.
Fatema initially joined the Humanitarian Affairs Unit of the Future Worlds Center in June 2013 as an intern social worker. She worked closely with Manos Mathioudakis, the senior Social Advisor, and offering social assistance to vulnerable social group, particularly to asylum seekers and refugees, within the framework of the UNHCR funded project entitled Strengthening Asylum.
Short Bio
Fatema completed a Bachelor degree in Social Work at the University of Nicosia, with highest distinction. In the past, she did an introductory courses of social sciences, basic theoretical concepts of social science, research methods and a few more (within the course of bachelor degree program of Social Science) with the Open University UK.
She has been working in the field of migration and asylum since 2005 in Cyprus, as a staff member of KISA - Action for Equality, Support, Antiracism as well as a social justice activist. Currently, she volunteers in a number of local civil society organisations active in diverse spectrum of human rights field (gender-based discrimination, LGBTI rights, bi-communal/ reconciliation issues).
Fatema is fluent in English, Greek and Bangla.
