About the Organization
The Societe dexploitation du centre national de la mer (Nausicaa) is a marine science centre and aquarium in Boulogne sur Mer in the North of France. It shows marine biodiversity on a 6000 m2 exhibition area to 620.000 visitors per year, from North West Europe (Benelux, France, Germany, and UK). It is one of the top ten tourist and cultural attractions in France.
The mission of Nausicaá is to raise awareness of the importance of the world's oceans, and educate the general public about how to better manage marine resources and protect the marine environment.
The permanent and temporary exhibitions highlight the relationship between man and marine environment. Moreover, Nausicaá disseminates scientific information and develops educational programmes, outreach activities, communication campaigns, tools and events. It was recognized as the world’s first Centre of Excellence for ocean education by the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission in 1999 and has collaborated with the UNESCO on many projects since then.
Nausicaá initiated a forward thinking reflection on the Blue Society and social innovation in marine issues through the Mobilisation and Mutual Learning Action Plan (MMLAP) Sea for Society. Nausicaá co-chairs the Laboratoire de la Blue Society which is a platform for knowledge sharing among researchers, businesses and civil society. Nausicaá is the coordinator of the MMLAP Sea For Society and hosts the secretariat of the World Ocean Network.
